The New 99%: Notes on Our Redesign

by Jocelyn K. Glei
Welcome to the newly redesigned 99% website. When we originally launched the 99%, the idea was to publish a handful of great articles and tips each week – thoughtful pieces that would help you push your ideas forward and work more efficiently. That hasn’t changed. A key tenet of making ideas happen is that you must closely manage your attention and your energy. If we’re taking up your time, we want it to be worthwhile. The goal of the redesign is to give you more (and more efficient) ways to explore our content as well as to open up the articles and tips for debate, discussion, and sharing.

The result is a crisp, new layout and quite a few subtle but powerful features:

1. More Depth & Breadth of Content.

While some sites focus on quantity of content, we will continue to focus on quality. Our goal is that everything we publish is worth reading – and maybe even revisiting later on. The new site reflects this approach by displaying the depth and breadth of our content over time.

In addition to highlighting the new research we’re doing, we will regularly be showcasing a handful of classic articles, tips, and videos from our archive on the homepage.

2. Twitter Replaces Noted.

After some trial and error, we’ve found that our Twitter feed, @the99percent, is a much more effective channel for sharing ideas, research, and great writing than our original homepage “Noted” column. Given this, our Twitter feed, with upwards of 30,000 followers now, has replaced Noted. We’re constantly updating it with insightful articles, new scientific research, and the odd get-your-ass-in-gear quotation.

3. New Comments System & Sharing Features.

We don’t want 99% to be a one-way conversation. Your feedback – article appreciations and, most importantly, comments – keeps us on our toes and keeps us learning. The new Disqus comment system we’ve implemented is designed to facilitate that discussion and debate in a seamless fashion. Ditto for the newly integrated Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Reddit share buttons.

4. Updated RSS Feed.

We’ve streamlined our RSS feed and upgraded it to a better system. If you’re already on it, I would suggest rolling over to the new RSS – it’s a cleaner, better, faster experience.

5. Monthly Workshops.

Small live events have become a regular part of the 99% initiative since last Fall. We’re now conducting “Making Ideas Happen” workshops at the Art Director’s Club in New York on a monthly basis. If your approach to organization and execution needs a shot in the arm, come join us for our November 2 workshop.

6. 99% Conference 2011.

We’ve also relaunched the entire 99% Conference mini-site, including ticket sales for our 2011 Conference to be held in New York, May 5-6, 2011. As last year’s conference sold out months in advance, with a 200+ person waiting list, we suggest purchasing early if you’d like to attend. Early-bird tickets are now available for $499 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

7. Your Feedback
Every website is a work in progress. If you see any bugs or have suggestions on things we could do better, please let us know.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the new site!

Onwards,

Jocelyn K. Glei
